Flagperson

SUMMARY

A Flagperson is assigned to protect personnel and their equipment while working on or near the tracks and to ensure the safe passage of trains.  This is accomplished though using various types of equipment, including flags, whistles and/or lights.  This position is also cross-trained as a Switchtender, and will use 2-way radios in the performance of these duties.

Flagpersons work outdoors and are subject to working in inclement weather conditions.

WAGE RATE

The current wage rate for this position is $10.00 per hour

HOURS OF SERVICE

 All Flagpersons are hired as PART-TIME, TEMPORARY employees.  Characteristics of the available assignments (including the number of workdays per week, the number of hours, starting and ending times, and work-site locations) will vary from week to week, with no guaranteed hours.  

SHIFT SCHEDULE

Flagpersons may be utilized, and must be available, any time during the day or night and any day of the week.  Shifts can range from three to nine hours in length.   Each Flagperson will have the opportunity to be assigned on a first-come, first serve basis for any available assignment.

TRAINING

Each Flagperson will undergo a two-day training session.  This will include an overview of Trolley operations, instructions in the standard operating procedures for flagging and switchtending of rail vehicles, and the proper use and care of necessary equipment.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma OR high school equivalency certificate (GED)
  • Must possess a valid CA driver's license for a minimum of 2 concurrent years prior to application.  A DMV H-6 driving record must be submitted with application
  • Must demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively
  • Must demonstrate an ability to read and comprehend written instructions
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be willing and able to work a variety of schedules

 SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates will be screened based on the following:

Employment application

  • Personal interview
  • Background check
  • Pre-employment physical, including urine drug screen

 DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE

San Diego Trolley, Inc. prohibits employees from using illegal drugs or abusing prescription drugs, while employed by the company.  Urine drug screens are required during the pre-employment physical examination and on a random basis, in accordance to the Federal Transit Administration. Employees discovered with illegal, or unauthorized drugs, or alcohol in their system are immediately discharged.  SDTI does not offer any rehabilitation programs for employees testing positive for drugs or alcohol.
