MTS Offers Special Red Line Service for Marathon

Trolley will not operate downtown during race for safety of runners 6:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.

San Diego – Runners and spectators getting ready to rock and roll on Sunday are encouraged take the Trolley to avoid traffic, road closures and parking hassles. The Metropolitan Transit System will operate special event ‘Red Line’ service on Sunday for the Rock and Roll Marathon; riders can park and board at Qualcomm Stadium to get to the Washington Street Trolley Station, near the starting line, in 18 minutes.

Red Line service starts at 4:15 a.m. from Qualcomm Stadium. Runners and spectators can use the Trolley to get to and from the starting and finishing line shuttles. For spectators, viewing points easily accessible from the Trolley Green Line include Fashion Valley at mile 12, Morena/Linda Vista at Mile 13.5, and Old Town at Mile 23.5. From the Blue and Orange Line, spectators can view the race from the Park and Market stop at mile 4.5, City College at miles 4.2 and 7.5 or Fifth Avenue and the Civic Center at mile 7.

Relay participants can take the Trolley to get to the hand-off points. Transition zone one for the relay is near the American Plaza and Santa Fe stations, both stations are served by the Blue Line. The second transition zone is located by Morena Linda Vista, which is an 11 minute ride from Qualcomm Stadium.

For safety reasons, the Trolley will not operate across the race course while runners are present. Instead, shuttle buses will bridge the gap from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. On the Blue and Orange Lines, buses will run from City College Station to the 5th Avenue Station in both directions. A special Orange Line Trolley will operate every 15 minutes between 12th & Imperial and the Convention Center Station. During this time, there will be no Orange Line service to the Seaport Village station. The Red Line service will also stop during the race and continue at 9:15 a.m.

Bus service downtown will also be halted due to road closures. Service will stop from 4 a.m. to noon – but could start again as early as 9:45 if the San Diego Police Department opens the roads. Many routes will be on detour – riders can check the take ones on the buses or visit http://www.sdmts.com/Bus/RockNRollMarathon.asp

MTS recommends purchasing a $5 day pass to ride the Trolley on Sunday in order to save time and avoid ticket lines after the race. Day Passes are good for unlimited rides on the bus and Trolley all day. For more info on Red Line Trolley service for the marathon, visit http://www.sdmts.com/Bus/RockNRollMarathon.asp
