Why?
The City of San Diego is reconstructing the 1st Ave. bridge over Maple Canyon in Bankers Hill for seismic and structural improvements. This major project will require a closure of 1st Ave. at the bridge.
When?
Starting November 17, 2008, and lasting approximately one year.
Where?
All Route 11 service will detour to 4th and 5th Avenues between Laurel St. and University Ave., serving all local Route 3 stops. When accessing 4th & 5th Avenues from 1st Ave., not all cross streets go through. There is a bridge at Quince St., but note that the bridge has steep stairs. See the map for more details.
Where can I catch the bus in Banker's Hill?
Passengers travelling north towards Hillcrest and SDSU can board Route 11 at any Route 3 stop on 5th Ave. between Laurel St. and University Ave.
Passengers travelling south towards Downtown and Skyline Hills can board Route 11 at any Route 3 stop on 4th Ave. between University Ave. and Laurel St.
Will the schedule change?
The detour will not require any changes to the Route 11 schedule.
What about the rest of the route on 1st Avenue?
There is no change to Route 11 service on 1st Ave. south of Laurel St.
Passengers with Disabilities
Route 11 passengers who are not able to access the temporary stops on 4th and 5th Avenues due to a disability may qualify to use MTS Access, our curb-to-curb paratransit service. Advanced eligibility certification is required. For more information on MTS Access service, please call 1-888-517-9627. For a certification application, call 1-877-232-7433 or visit www.adaride.com.
We regret any inconvenience that this detour causes to our passengers, and we will resume regular operations as soon as possible. The City estimates that this part of 1st Ave. will re-open to MTS service in December 2009.
