Apprentice Assistant Lineman

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The Apprenticeship Program is divided into two main segments: Assistant Lineman and Lineman. Each segment is approximately two years in duration and consists of on-the-job training and formal classroom training. The formal classroom training is conducted on the employee’s own time and may consist of attending classes at San Diego City College, or other approved local junior colleges, and formal classes held on the Company’s premises. The Company pays for the cost of the tuition and books.

At the conclusion of the Assistant Lineman Apprenticeship Program, the State of California awards the employee a Journeyman’s Certificate as an Assistant Lineman, Department of Industrial Relations; Division of Apprenticeship Standards. The employee is then enrolled in the Apprentice Lineman Program. At the conclusion of the Lineman Program, the employee is awarded a Journeyman’s Certificate as a Lineman. The employee is then eligible for promotion to Electromechanic

 

ASSISTANT LINEMAN JOB DESCRIPTION

A newly hired Assistant Lineman may be assigned to one of two maintenance Divisions. The Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the LRV’s (Trolley Cars). This includes all mechanical, electrical and electronic systems on a LRV. These employees work primarily in an enclosed maintenance facility.

The Maintenance of Way and Power (MOW) Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all systems, other than LRV. This includes overhead catenary (600 DC power) lines, power stations, signaling systems, and crossing gates. These employees work primarily outdoors.

All maintenance departments operate seven days per week and schedule either two or three shifts per day. A newly hired Assistant Lineman should expect to be assigned to work weekends, holidays, and nights. Overtime work may be required.

 

WAGE RATE

Current starting hourly rate of pay is $15.26. After a six-month probationary period, the employee is eligible for a raise in pay to $16.64 per hour. The employee is then eligible for wage increases every six months. Top rate of pay for an Assistant Lineman is $20.85 per hour.

The top rate of pay for a Lineman is $24.03 per hour. The top rate of pay for an Electromechanic (after approximately six years from hire date) is $26.90 per hour.

These rates are subject to negotiation with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 465 and are, therefore, subject to change.

 

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Although there are no direct work-related qualifications, each application must be submitted with the following attachments:

  1. Proof of graduation from High School or copy of GED Certificate
  2. Proof of one semester of Algebra, with a passing grade of "C" or better
  3. Results of the Apprenticeship Standards Test, taken through the San Diego Community College distrcit within six months of application date, showing a minimum Reading score of R5, Writing score of W5, and Math score of M3
  4. Current copy of DMV driving record

 

ASSISTANT LINEMAN SELECTION PROCESS

Those candidates demonstrating the necessary academic skills, pursuant to the qualifying examination, will be screened based on the following:

  • Information contained in the employment application
  • Personal interviews
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Physical examination, including urinalysis drug testing, administered by the Company physician


Only after candidates have completed all of the above steps will final selections be made and employment offers rendered.


DRUG FREE WORK PLACE

MTS and the San Diego Trolley. prohibit employees from using illegal drugs or abusing prescription drugs, while employed by the company. Drug and alcohol screens are required during the pre-employment physical examination and on a random basis, in accordance to the Federal Transit Administration. Employees discovered with illegal, or unauthorized drugs, or alcohol in their system are immediately discharged. The Trolley does not offer any rehabilitation programs for employees testing positive for drugs or alcohol.

APPRENTICESHIP TEST PREPARATION

Apprenticeship programs offered through San Diego Trolley, Inc. require the following scores on the College Placement Test held at City College.

Math test: placement into Math 95 (M3)
Reading test: placement into English 101 (R5)
Writing test: placement into English 101 (R5)

  • Before testing, you must submit a College Application. This can be done in person at City College, Rm. A-112 or online at http://sdccd.net (click Online College Application). Test scores cannot be processed without an up-to-date application!
  • If you feel that your English/math skills are up to date, you can make a testing appointment right away with the City College Counseling Office. Please call (619)388-3540. Tell the person who takes your call that you are applying for the San Diego Trolley apprenticeship program and they will schedule your appointment for the College Placement Test by telephone.
  • If you prefer to refresh your English/math skills before taking the College Placement Test, you can attend FREE review classes offered by the San Diego Community College District. These are open entry classes that may be started at almost anytime. Review locations and phone numbers are listed on the back of this flyer. Please call the review location for available class times.
  • If you decide to attend a review class, take this flyer with you to the review class and inform the instructor that you need to prepare for the College Placement Test and that you need to meet the above skill levels in English and math.
  • The instructor will have you register for the class by filling out a simple form. There is NO COST for the class. The instructor can determine the type of review best suited to your current skills.
