Rules for Riding

Wheelchair and Priority Seating Enforcement!

State law and MTS policy require passengers to relinquish their seats to seniors and people with disabilities if the seat is located in a wheelchair or priority seating area of the bus or Trolley or you risk a fine.

Animals

  • Trained service animals accompanying persons with disabilities are always welcome on board bus and Trolley services. Please be aware that a bus operator or other MTS representatives may ask if the animal is a service animal and what task the animal has been trained to perform in accordance with ADA DOT laws.
  • Non-service animals must be fully contained inside an enclosed carrier that you can hold on your lap and transport by yourself.
  • Animals must be kept under your control at all times.
  • Operators have the right to refuse to transport your animal because of noise or odor.

Bicycles

Food and Drink

  • Eating is not allowed on buses or Trolleys
  • Beverages must be in spill-proof or screw-top containers
  • Smoking is not allowed on or around buses, Trolleys, stations or bus stops

Luggage and Items

  • Firearms are not allowed on any bus or Trolley
  • Knives are not allowed on any bus or Trolley
  • Earphones must be used when listening to music
  • Belongings should be small enough to fit on your lap or at your feet
  • The following large items can be brought on board:
    • Boogie boards
    • Surf boards under 6 feet long
    • Collapsible fishing poles
    • Collapsible bicycles
    • Wheelchairs
    • Walkers
    • Strollers
    • Small carts under 30 inches tall, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep (not including handle and wheels)

    • Hoverboards - hoverboards are not be permitted to be ridden within any MTS transit center, transit station, bus or trolley vehicle. When using MTS services, passengers must carry and secure their hoverboard in the “off” position. This policy follows recent reports of safety hazards while the device is in use or while charging.
  • Drivers and security personnel have the authority to declare cargo too big or dangerous to be transported
  • Route 992 (Airport Shuttle) is exempt from the size restrictions above
Full Cart, Stroller, and Cargo Policy

Seating

  • Priority seating by the doors of both buses and Trolleys are reserved for seniors and disabled riders. 
  • When utilizing priority seating, passengers must fold down the seat completely flat before sitting. At no time may passengers sit on top of the seat’s backrest or on the top of a folded seat.
  • State law and MTS policy require passengers to relinquish their seat to seniors and people with disabilities if the seat is located in a wheelchair or priority seating area of the bus or Trolley. These seats and areas are designated by blue signs.
  • Refusal to vacate a seat for a senior/disabled rider upon request may result in a citation and the following fines:
    • $25 for first offense
    • $50 for second offense
    • $100 for third and subsequent offenses

Vandalism

  • Vandalism is a serious crime and will be punished with a fine or jail sentence
  • You can anonymously report any vandalism on MTS property
