MTS Celebrates Earth Day Across San Diego

Attendees can reduce their carbon footprint by taking public transit to the Earth Fair

San Diego, CA – The Metropolitan Transit System encourages people to ride public transit to Earth Day celebrations next week, as public transit is consistently one of the best and easiest ways to make an individual contribution to a healthier planet. Saving one gallon of gas by taking public transit eliminates 19 pounds of carbon emissions.

“With 75 percent of the MTS fleet running on compressed natural gas, MTS is on its way to meeting national and state clean air regulations,” MTS Chief Executive Officer Paul Jablonski said. “The Earth Fair at Balboa Park provides an opportunity to showcase the advancements that have been made in transportation.”

Earth Fair attendees can take the zero-emission San Diego Trolley to the City College Station and transfer to one of the MTS clean and efficient compressed natural gas Route 7 buses that offer service to the Park. In order to transfer, riders should use their monthly pass or purchase a Day Pass at the Trolley Station or when boarding the Bus. And on Sunday, two children (12 and under) ride free with each person (18 and older) regular adult fare.

MTS will also introduce the new Compass Cards at their booth. Earth Fair attendees can to try them at a validator. This year, MTS is transitioning from paper passes to more eco-friendly and reloadable Compass Cards that utilize smart card technology so riders can just tap and ride.

MTS will also be participating at Earth Day @ SDSU on April 22 and University of San Diego’s Healthy Living Fair and University of California San Diego’s Clean Car Show on April 23 as well. MTS encourages students to try public transit during the Earth Day events and during the school year by buying a student semester pass.
