MTS Recommends Fans Take Public Transit to Tony Gywnn Memorial Due to Large Crowds

San Diego Padres anticipating more than 25,000 fans and significant traffic congestion

San Diego – Due to large crowds expected at the memorial tribute to Tony Gwynn on Thursday, June 26 at Petco Park, Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) officials are advising fans to take the Trolley or bus to avoid traffic congestion and ensure timely arrival and departure for the event.

Gates to PETCO Park open at 5:30 p.m. and the memorial begins at 7:19 p.m.

All three MTS Trolley lines provide direct service to PETCO Park. The Green Line – which goes all the way from Santee to ballpark-area stations – will bring fans steps away from PETCO Park entrances. Extra trains will be running on the Green Line from Qualcomm Stadium beginning at 5:45 p.m. and additional trains will depart after the event as needed. Blue Line and Orange Line passengers should debark at the 12th & Imperial station for PETCO Park. Fans who ride the Trolley will avoid traffic hassles and can park for free at one of many park-and-rides available on MTS’s three light rail lines.

Bus routes 11, 901 and 929 stop at PETCO Park and bus routes 3, 4, and 5 provide downtown service just a short walk from the ballpark. All buses will run on a regular schedule. Additionally, the new Rapid 235, which began service on June 8, can take fans from the Escondido Transit Center and other transit stations along the I-15 corridor to downtown San Diego. It operates from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. For more information about Rapid, please visit RapidMTS.com.

MTS also recommends fans to buy day passes before boarding the Trolley or bus on their way to PETCO Park to save time and avoid ticket lines after the memorial. Day passes are $5 for people with Compass Cards. There is a $2 fee for day passes purchased without Compass Card. When arriving at stations, passengers can purchase a one-way or day pass ticket from the ticket vending machines located at the station.

Once passengers obtain a Compass Card, it can be reloaded with additional fares at station ticket vending machines. Compass Cards can also be used to purchase and load other adult fare products without any additional service charge.

MTS operates more than 90 bus routes and three Trolley lines on 53 miles of double-tracked railway. For more information on how to save money by using public transportation, go to www.sdmts.com.
