MTS Fights Hunger with Stuff the Bus Food Drive

The Metropolitan Transit System is answering County Supervisor Ron Roberts’ call to help fill the San Diego Food Bank this year. Our food drive will begin with employees and then spread throughout the region.

The San Diego Food Bank has faced a tough year with demand often outweighing donations. The holidays are an especially important time to remember to give to the San Diego Food Bank. With economic factors like unemployment and homelessness on the rise this year, it is even more important to help.

Our goal is to fill one of our new NABI buses with food. These NABI's are 60-feet long, and could be filled with food to feed hundreds of families.

How to donate: There will be a press conference at 10 a.m. on Tuesday December 16 to launch the food drive at the Vons at Liberty Station on 2535 Truxtun Road, (between Roosevelt Rd & Worden Rd) in San Diego. Mayor Jerry Sanders, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, MTS CEO Paul Jablonski and San Diego Food Bank Board President Stephen Cushman will speak.

Tuesday December 16 stuff the bus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Liberty Station Vons

Saturday December 20 stuff the Bus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at

Market Creek Plaza at 310 North Euclid Ave. in San Diego
Albertsons at 8650 Lake Murray Blvd. in San Diego
Albertsons at 10633 Tierra Santa Blvd. in San Diego

Albertsons selling Turkey Bucks: To raise money for local food banks, Albertsons grocery stores will be selling "Turkey Buck" coupons, in $1 and $5 denominations, at their cashier stations. Customers can donate $1 or $5 or more toward the campaign. All proceeds will be used to prepare turkey dinners for local families in need.

What to bring: The San Diego Food Bank needs food that will provide nutritious meals for people in need. They are looking for all kinds of canned and boxed food. The most needed items include:

• Canned meat & tuna
• Canned soups
• Canned fruits and vegetables
• Peanut butter
• Canned beans
• Pasta
• Dry cereal
• Rice
• Mac & cheese

They cannot accept perishable items or items in glass jars due to food safety regulations.

Thank you for helping out those in need during this Holiday Season.
