Exact fare is required on buses. Bus drivers cannot make change. There are no upgrades or free transfers to or from the Trolley or other buses. Most Trolley ticket vending machines can give up to $5 in change. Ticket vending machines at San Ysidro, America Plaza, Santa Fe Depot, and SDSU Trolley stations give up to $15 in change. All Trolley ticket machines accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills and credit/debit cards. $1 Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea coins are also accepted.

One-way Trolley tickets, available for $2.50 from ticket vending machines, are good for travel for two hours from the time of purchase on any MTS Trolley. Transfers between Trolley lines are allowed to complete your one-way trip. Round trips and transfers between Trolley and bus are not allowed with a one-way ticket. Purchase your ticket before boarding the Trolley from the ticket vending machines at each station. If your trip involves more than one bus or the Trolley and a bus, consider purchasing a Day Pass which allows unlimited rides for the duration of the service day.

Regional Day Passes are $5 with a Compass Card ($7 without: $5 Day Pass plus $2 for reusable Compass Card) and available from ticket vending machines. Paper Day Passes are available for $7 from bus operators and may be traded in at The Transit Store for a Day Pass on Compass Card during the day for which the pass is valid. Day passes are good for unlimited rides on most MTS bus and Trolley routes (except Rapid Express, Rural, Access, and special services) as well as NCTD BREEZE and SPRINTER. The RegionPlus Day Pass is $12 and good for all services listed above as well as Rapid bus service and the COASTER. To purchase a RegionPlus Day Pass on a regular service (non-Rapid Express service) bus, you must tell the driver before you pay your fare that you want the $12 RegionPlus Day Pass.
