Educational facts and questions:
From 1886 to 1969 ferryboats use to travel between Coronado and San Diego carrying passengers and automobiles. San Diego’s ferry service ended in August 1969 when the Coronado Bridge was opened. Then, in 1987 San Diego Harbor Excursion began providing daily passenger ferryboat service between Coronado and San Diego again.
Ferries provide an important mass transportation link in other major coastal cities such as New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver. The Berkeley, now docked at San Diego’s Embarcadero, ferried San Franciscans across the bay from 1898 to 1958 and was the first propeller driven ferryboat on the west coast.
Ask your students if they have ever visited Coronado. Ask them how they went to Coronado. Did they drive over the bridge? Did they notice people carpooling? Do they know that MTS bus Route 901 provides frequent daily service between San Diego and Coronado? Ask them if they have ever taken the ferryboat from the Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego to the Old Ferry Landing in Coronado.
