Calling all high school students: don't miss your chance to win a brand new laptop! The annual Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest is back this fall, where 40 San Diego County High School students (grades 9 - 12) who have the best scored essays on this year's prompt will win a new laptop. Read on for details below and be sure to submit your essay before the deadline!

Essay Prompt:

Earlier this year, the San Diego County of Governments (SANDAG), the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and North County Transit District (NCTD) launched a temporary pilot program offering free transit access to youth 18 and under.

For the 2022 Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest, sponsored by Reyes Coca-Cola, students will write a persuasive essay on the value of the pilot program, and why it should or should not continue. Persuasive essays should clearly identify their position on the topic, and use arguments to defend their position (data, facts, examples, experiences, etc.) High level persuasive essays may also include a counter argument that is addressed.

How do you think the Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program (YOP) benefits students, individuals, groups, communities or families beyond getting to school? What else can MTS do to get more students 18 and under to use YOP and ride transit? What would you include to further expand the opportunities it provides?

  • Submissions should include quotes from a minimum of two friends, family, or community members or leaders to support and/or counter their arguments.
  • Submissions should include whether or not the student has a YOP card or downloaded the app. And provide details as to why or why not (Submissions will not be deducted points based on this answer, but ability to explain rationale in either case will be scored accordingly.)

Accepted essays will be a minimum of 750 words (please limit essays to no more than 1,000 words).
