MTS OnTrack to gather community input on future service plans
San Diego – The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) reminds San Diego residents of the last week to participate in MTS OnTrack, a public engagement initiative to help the agency strategically manage a significant budget deficit in 2028. Through this initiative, San Diego residents can share feedback to help shape two scenarios for the future of MTS service.
One plan will identify potential service improvements if new local, state, or federal funding are identified. The other will prepare for service reductions should MTS receive no additional funding.
Members of the public who are interested in shaping the future of MTS services can participate in online activities through Sept. 12. MTS is encouraging residents to help shape the future of transit in San Diego by completing three online activities:
- Vote for the priorities that matter most to you in a public transit system.
- Map where you want to see new and/or improved bus and Trolley service in the region
- Join the conversation about transportation project and service needs, trending project ideas, and more.
More information on MTS OnTrack, including ways to get involved, is available at sdmts.com/OnTrack.
While MTS ridership has increased in recent years—thanks to efforts such as expanded service, more frequent Trolley trips and strengthened security—the agency still faces a projected $120 million budget gap by Fiscal Year 2029. This shortfall equals about 25% of the agency’s operating budget. While no major changes are anticipated to happen until 2028, MTS is taking a strategic, thought-out approach to the issue at hand. A critical part of the strategy is gaining significant public feedback.
In the meantime, MTS has already taken steps to manage costs and delay the impacts of the shortfall. For example, the agency has postponed service expansions, slowed its transition to zero-emission buses, increased fare enforcement, and implemented other operational cost-saving measures.
