MTS Memorial Day Weekend Service Schedule and Promotions

Coronado’s “Free Summer Shuttle” Route 904 will begin service on Friday, May 24

San Diego – More than three million Southern Californians are expected to travel this Memorial Day Weekend, with many descending on San Diego’s parks and beaches.  MTS has a number of promotions and beach service options for the holiday. Additionally, MTS buses and Trolleys will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, May 27, and passengers should plan accordingly.

Promotions: Riding MTS to the Beach: San Diegans can shake off the ‘May Gray’ by spending the unofficial start of the summer at one of our many beaches accessible by MTS bus.  Some of the routes with downtown and best beach access are:

  • Route 8: Old Town – Mission Bay – Mission Beach – Pacific Beach
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day
  • Route 9: Old Town – Sea World
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day
  • Route 30: Old Town – Pacific Beach – La Jolla – UTC
  • Runs every 15 minutes most of the day between Old Town & Pacific Beach
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day between Pacific Beach, La Jolla & UTC
  • Route 35: Old Town – Ocean Beach
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day
  • Rapid 215: SDSU – City Heights – North Park –Hillcrest – Downtown 
  • Runs every 15 minutes most of the day
  • Rapid 235: Escondido – Rancho Bernardo – Miramar College – City Heights – Downtown
  • Runs every 30 minutes all day
  • Route 901: Downtown – Coronado – Imperial Beach
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day on Saturday, 60 minutes all day on Sunday and Monday
  • Route 933/934: Iris Avenue Transit Center – Palm City – Imperial Beach
  • Runs every 30 minutes most of the day

Family Weekends! On Saturday and Sunday MTS will allow up to two children (age 12 and under) to ride free with a fare-paying adult (age 18 or older) on all MTS routes.

Friends Ride Free! On Memorial Day, MTS is will allow one friend (any age) to ride free with a paying passenger on any bus or Trolley.

Scheduling: Coronado’s “Free Summer Shuttle” (Route 904, sponsored by the City of Coronado) will begin service on Friday, May 24 between Coronado City Hall and the Ferry Landing via Hotel del Coronado. The free shuttle runs from approximately 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every 15 minutes seven days per week, with later evening service on Fridays and Saturdays. 

Service schedule impacts for Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, are as follows:

  • Most MTS buses and all Trolleys will operate on a Sunday schedule
  • Rapid 201/202, 215, 225 and 235 – Sunday schedule
  • Rapid 204 and 237 – No service
  • Express Routes 20 and 950 – Sunday schedule
  • Rapid Express 204, 237, 280 and 290 – No service
  • Sorrento Valley COASTER Connection (Routes 972, 973, 978, 979) – No service
  • Express Routes 50, 60, 110 and 150– No Service
  • Rural Route 888 – Operates on Tuesday, May 28 instead
  • Rural Routes 891, 892 and 894 – No service
  • MTS Access – Passengers with subscriptions who want service on this day must call to arrange transportation

Support Services: The MTS Information and Trip Planning call center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day, while the MTS Transit Store, Compass Service Center and Customer Service call center will be closed.

MTS operates 95 bus routes and three Trolley lines on 53 miles of double-tracked railway. Every weekday 300,000 passenger trips are taken on MTS bus and Trolley services in 10 cities and the county.
