MTS Thanks Outgoing Boardmembers for Service

Six Long-Time Board Members’ Collective Experience
on MTS Board is more than 55 Years

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System honored six outgoing board members last week for their commitment to public transportation in the San Diego region.

“These board members have donated invaluable amounts of time to serve the community,” said MTS Chairman Harry Mathis. “Collectively, they had more than 55 years experience on our board. During their tenure, MTS has expanded the Trolley, seen ridership reach new records, consolidated its internal operations and balanced budgets during difficult economic times. They have done an outstanding job for the people of our region.”

The departing board members are Robert Emery of the Poway City Council, who served for 23, Thomas Clabby of the Lemon Grove City Council (12 years), Brian Maienschein (8 years) and Toni Atkins (six years), both of the San Diego City Council, and Phil Monroe of the Coronado City Council (six years).

There have been many advances in public transportation since these members were appointed to the board. All of the departing board members helped celebrate the opening of the Trolley’s Green Line in 2005. They oversaw the consolidation of internal functions within MTS trolley and bus divisions that resulted in significant cost savings. And they have been integral in the replacement of diesel buses with clean and efficient Compressed Natural Gas and other alternative fuel buses.

The Metropolitan Transit System's Board of Directors is comprised of 15 members that represent San Diego County. Four of the members are selected by the San Diego City Council, nine are appointed from municipal city councils – one from each of Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Poway and Santee. Also one is appointed from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The Chairman is a resident of San Diego, selected by the board members.

The MTS Board of Directors usually meets twice a month. Agendas are posted online. For more information, visit www.sdmts.com.
