MTS Bus Earns National Safety Award

MTS - Bus

Safely transporting passengers to and from their destinations is the number one priority for MTS. Each year, the agency sets out to reduce and/or eliminate preventable accidents and pedestrian incidents.

In March 2016, the MTS Bus division launched a campaign to eliminate pedestrian accidents:

  • Pause, Focus, Look – This new mantra was reinforced through driver training and signage around bus yards. Additionally, supervisors, managers and signage were placed in high-pedestrian activity locations throughout the system to keep pedestrians top-of-mind for bus operators.

  • New Training Technology – Drone video footage was used to provide operators with different viewing angles and to help better visualize intersections and safe driving techniques.

  • Enhanced Equipment – Buses were retrofitted with smaller side mirrors that helped provide improved pedestrian sight lines for drivers.

All of these improvements and more helped the MTS Bus team achieve zero preventable accidents involving pedestrians between April and December 2016.

As a result of the effort, we’re proud to share that MTS Bus was given the top safety award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA)! This is the second Gold Award in three years that MTS Bus has won for safety.
